Checking in after the “Great Facebook Fiasco”

I could have (maybe should have?) sent this email on Monday, Oct 4th, when Facebook, Instagram and What’s App were down and out. You know, be the first to address the problem.

But… I didn’t want to.

I wanted to sit back and see what others said concerning the 6-hour social media collapse.

Then on Oct 8th it happened AGAIN!

I knew digital marketing experts would come out in troves to push people to start building their email marketing lists.

What I didn’t see coming was the other half of the reaction. Peace, calm and … relief that small business owners could remove social media management from their to-do list for the day.

Here’s the thing. The people who weren’t worried about the social media collapse, they used more than one platform to market their businesses.

So, here’s my recommendation: Diversify.

Here are a few ideas to help you get scrappy to introduce more people to your local business:

  • Optimize your website for search engines

  • Send press releases for newsworthy events

  • Create sharable/searchable content (blogs)

  • Host community events

  • Create Pinterest posts

  • Start a TikTok

  • Send snail mail ads or invites

  • Share a word-of-mouth-only discount with your clients

And, yes, you can (and should) still include these platforms in your marketing strategy:

  • Facebook

  • Instagram

  • Email marketing

On the other hand, if you felt like you finally had peace because you didn’t have to deal with social media, it may be time to outsource your social media and SAVE your peace.
