WRITING FOR READERS

Wonderland Bookshop, Social Media Captions

When I started writing for small businesses the thought of writing for an independent bookstore was one of the absolute most romantic possibilities.

In a previous writing season, one of my most beautiful, bookish friends and I worked together to create a bookstagram account, and that’s when I fell in love with books and reading and bookstores again.

When Amy and Beth, Wonderland Bookshop’s owners and Greensboro’s book sisters, reached out to Local Type, excitement filled the room.

In my first email to them, I said, “independent bookstores are my jam.” Looking back, that still feels right.

What they needed:

The sisters had two goals for Instagram.

  1. Consistent marketing.

  2. Engagement with their community.

They needed to consistently communicate with Greensboro, State Street, families, moms, kids, teens — all kinds of book lovers from runny nose readers to college-bound bibliophiles.

Their dream of opening an independent bookstore was about more than providing books. It was about creating a community around books for book lovers and children learning to love reading and explore the many worlds tucked into the pages of their books.

What we did about it:

I created a bank of captions for Amy and Beth to fall back on when it came time to post, and they didn’t have the words. While all the captions were evergreen, not tied to a specific season or time, many of them were also quick, fun and engaging for children and parents.

While you’re reading, you may also notice something that seems a bit outdated these days. Hashtags, and lots of ‘em! Yes, this was a few months before Instagram stopped relying more heavily on them. So, one of the things I did for this indie bookstore was to pair strategic hashtags with each caption.

Madalyn Yates Photography captured images to perfectly, intentionally pair with the captions I wrote for Wonderland Bookshop.

What they said:

After working with Local Type, Amy and Beth said that the bank of captions we created widened their understanding of writing for social media.

“It’s expanded our brains into what we can use as content and words. It’s been a delightful hit of creativity that we needed.”

When I asked what they would tell other small business owners, they said, “The personalized service offered by Sarah can’t be beat. She understands “local” and what is needed for us as a small business.”

If you’re interested in working with a local copywriter to take the guesswork out of marketing your business, let me know.

And, of course, if you really want to kick your marketing into high gear, let me know you’re interested in brand photography, too! Madalyn and I make a great team for small businesses like yours.
